Bulgaria's Pomaks and the ethnic Turks, the two major Muslim minority groups in the small East European state of eight million people are nearly 8% of the country's population and the largest Muslim minority community in the European Union.
Bulgaria's Pomak Muslims are generally thought to be the descendants of Slavs who converted to Islam during Ottoman domination in the country between the 14th and the 19th centuries.
