In its effort to overcome liberal democracy and create a centralized authoritarian regime the ruling Fidesz party, under constant ideological pressure from far right Jobbik, has started a war of dominance against the country's cultural institutions deemed to be left-liberal. The opera house has already been provincially streamlined, the New Theatre is being handed over to a far right leadership and statues of progressive politicians and poets are to fall. Next on the agenda is the National Theatre, the artistic director of which has been on the hit-list for years, not least for being gay. Jobbik calls all this "fight for liberty".
