Koreen joined the Syrian uprising to oust president Bashar al-Assad at a very early stage in 2011. It has been the scene of army attacks and heavy shelling ever since 2012. In the course of the fighting the village of a few thousand inhabitants was almost abandoned as barrel bomb campaigns led by the regime pounded Koreen. But since regime forces have retreated to a few bases remaining in Idlib province people are returning home to establish a new and almost unregulated economic, social and community life. The regime's power has no affect and cannot reach them anymore. On the other hand a new government is neither established nor in sight. Koreen is free to make its way.
